Февраль прошлого года был суров и обманчив. В Карелии еще стояли суровые морозы. 6 февраля в поселке Ладва мороз достигал 43 градусов, а в Новосибирске 10 февраля — 44. И все-таки февраль — месяц первых сосулек, первой капели и первых лужиц у стен домов. Пусть морозы еще сильны, весна уже показалась в Карелии и в Сибири. Первая сосулька отмечена в Карелии 17 февраля. Первая сосулька в Московской области — 9 февраля, лужи на дорогах — 22 февраля, появление шариков вербы (ивы-краснотала) — 22 февраля. Первая сосулька в Златоусте — 16 февраля.
Вот что рассказывает о первом дыхании весны в Златоусте Витя Голосов: «Наступила первая оттепель. Галки и вороны носятся с криками над крышами, а сороки сядут на забор и давай трещать.
Воробьи же совсем посходили с ума. Перелетают с дерева на дерево и подняли такой шум, хоть уши затыкай. На их чириканье вышел кот. Он стал медленно подкрадываться к воробьям, но я его прогнал. Пусть птицы радуются первому февральскому солнышку — зимой оно не так часто бывает».
Сообщение из Горьковской области от Игоря Новичкова: «Капает с крыш, появились первые проталины, первые лужицы около домов».
Добралась весна и до Новосибирска. Валя Лац-Бер: «Первая оттепель продолжалась три дня. Первую сосульку нашла я 18 февраля, а первую лужицу около дома — 25 февраля».
И наконец, письмо Миши Шилина из Ленинграда: «Хотя в лесу свирепствуют вьюги, ветры, морозы, все равно все живое лесов, полей и водоемов готовится к встрече весны. Узнав о скором приходе весны, коростель отправился из Африки на родину. Глядишь, к концу весны дома будет.
